Investing in our Children's Future: Understanding Stimulus Funding and Leveraging Philanthropy to Support Long-term Education Goals

Hosted by Foundation Center in partnership with the
Forum of Regional Association of Grantmakers

Despite the many challenges facing our nation, we enter 2010 with a unique opportunity to advance the cause of education reform in this country. President Obama and Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan have committed to investing unprecedented federal resources to improving our nation's schools.  The education funding community has a unique opportunity to form partnerships and leverage these resources to promote and support more effective education policies and practices, particularly in the next few months.

A national webinar, to discuss the U.S. Department of Education’s strategies and priorities regarding stimulus funding, reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), and the proposed 2011 Federal budget.

When:         February 16, 2010 from 2:00 - 3:30 pm

Speakers:    Judy Wurtzel, Deputy Secretary for Planning,
                        Evaluation, and Policy Development
                        Charlie Rose, General Counsel
                        U.S. Department of Education

This event will provide a forum to discuss the following important issues related to
improving K-12 public schooling across the country:

 1.  Maximizing the Opportunity: Why the next few months constitute a criticalmoment for funders to mobilize support for efforts to develop and scale  educational innovations that have the potential to reduce the achievement gap.

2.  Mapping the Landscape: What opportunities exist for funders to leverage their financial resources through partnerships and what is the timeline for participating in them?

3.  Being Strategic: How can funders work together in coming months to identify the resources needed to ensure that best-in-class education organizations are well positioned to compete for Federal funding?

4.  Generating and Maintaining Local/Regional Momentum: To mobilize desired partnerships, funders will need to organize ongoing conversations that help coordinate and align funder collaboratives with local/regional opportunities. What is the best way to do this?
