Environmental Sustainability and the St. Louis Region Report

Across the public, private, citizen and nonprofit sectors, a revitalized environmental movement is gaining momentum.     And, the nonprofit sector has witnessed a large increase in the number of organizations dedicated to protecting the environment, as well as an increase in private philanthropic funding of environmental issues. 

The Gateway Center for Giving convened the Environmental Funders Affinity Group (Environmental Funders) in 2006 as a forum for donors in the region who fund or are interested in learning more about environmental issues and resources in the environmental nonprofit community.  Their goals include:

  • Increase access to information about the region’s environmental nonprofit organizations (ENO’s) 
  • Improve the capacity of the region’s ENO’s
  • Foster greater collaboration and a stronger environmental voice in the region

This group of funders recognized there was a lack of centralized knowledge about environmental nonprofit organizations serving the region. In an effort to enhance that knowledge base, the group conducted a comprehensive scan of environmental nonprofits in the 16-county St. Louis region.  The report they commissioned contains information about the major environmental challenges facing the region and then catalogs those environmental service providers who are working to address them.
 
The Environmental Sustainability and the Saint Louis Region Report provides a brief scan of the region’s environmental priorities and performance, its ENO’s and examines the regional scope of environmental issues and ENO’s in the context of state and national trends.  In addition, it explores the opportunities and challenges of funding in the environmental field and discusses the utility of this report to the public, private, nonprofit and citizens sectors.
