Funder Briefing:
Immigrants & Refugees in St. Louis
Thursday, November 8, 2018

St. Louis continues to serve as a gateway for immigrants and refugees seeking a new life in America. While the number of immigrants and refugees has grown in our region, so have the challenges for this population, such as the lack of access to quality education, health, and transportation; limited awareness of available resources and services, low-paying employment opportunities; and systemic language barriers. Meanwhile, the restrictionist national policy environment has created considerable uncertainty, placing new immigrants in greater peril.

Gateway Center for Giving is teaming up with Kristine Walentik, Chair of the Immigrant Service Providers Network (ISPN) to host a conversation about immigration in St. Louis and how this unique population has been impacted by our nation's federal policies. Founded by a group of local grantmakers, the ISPN is a collaborative of community, labor, faith, business and direct service organizations focused on education and outreach to enhance the quality of their services. Representatives from the original group of funders will also speak about their experience in starting the ISPN and in continuing to support the immigrant and refugee community.

Participants will leave this program with:
  • A picture of our immigration population in St. Louis and an understanding of the challenges that immigrants face;
  • A review of recent policy changes affecting our immigrant community, and a sense of how local immigrant service providers and funders are responding; and
  • Engagement opportunities for grantmakers looking to support service providers and/or immigrant communities.
